FAMILY

I met my wife in January of 1992 at the UNTAC headquarters in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She worked as a secretary to my Superior. She frequently visited my office while making copies and dropping off letters. I observed her very closely and found that she is very smart and the woman that i had been waiting for.

» What attracted me to her was that she came to work the first week and she could not even speak English but I knew she was trying very hard. She would ask me every word that her boss wrote and in turned she wrote them into Khmer language so that she could remember.

» One month later, she was able to speak some words and engage in conversation with other employees. I always encouraged her to speak and to not shy away.

» At first she did not accept my heart because her father did not approve of a Cambodian guy like me. So I observed the love in her eyes and I knew she was mine. So told her not to worry about what her father thought, that I would take care of her as long as she would accept my proposal. Her only respose was with a smile.

» Her family is Cambodian-Chinese and a 2nd generation of Cambodia. But I was able to prove myself to her father and he finally accepted me into his family. He asked me how much money I had. I told him that I had no money but that I have the heart and determination to work for a better life.

» Unfortunately, one week before our wedding was scheduled, her home was robbered including my final pay of $795.00 that I was saving to pay for our wedding costs.

» Our wedding was schedule on Janaury 23, 1994. But we had no money so I went the UNTAC office at my work to inform them about my situation and they kindly helped me pay for my wedding. After the wedding, we had eighteen dollars on left. My wife was crying and I told her not to worry we still had four hands and a job to do.

My wife is able to speak six languages without a degree but she does have talent with bargining. She speaks the following languages: Thailand, Vietnamese, English, Spannish, 3 Chinese languages
